If the vision sets the direction, the programme is what keeps everything alive – and slightly on edge.
“Our core festival programming team consists of 12 people,” says Festival Manager Veeky Tan. “The managers meet almost every two days just to stay aligned. The full team meets weekly – that’s when we make sure everything is still… on track.”
“On track,” in this context, covers everything from artists and vendors to volunteers and front-of-house teams. Each meeting has a different focus, but the goal is constant: keep things moving.
The Festival Manager oversees the planning and delivery of KL Festival, managing programmes, timelines, budgets, and stakeholders, all while ensuring smooth operations while upholding the festival’s artistic vision and public engagement goals.
For fellow Festival Manager Hoe Hui Ting, the process has also reshaped how she sees the city itself. “I’m not originally from Kuala Lumpur, but working on this festival has made me slow down and experience it more intentionally,” she shares. “It’s shown me sides of the city I would’ve otherwise missed.”
For Veeky, on the other hand, the connection runs deeper. “I was born in Tung Shin Hospital, and now I work across the road at GMBB,” she says. “My school was near the Klang River – I used to take the monorail every day.”
Somewhere between logistics meetings and artist calls, these personal memories begin to seep into the programme. The result isn’t a single version of Kuala Lumpur, but many – layered, overlapping, sometimes contradictory.
What are some of the programmes the festival team is looking forward to? “One programme I’m excited about is Siapa Cacat?,” says Hui Ting. “It involves Deaf, Disabled and neurodivergent artists, with elements like sign language and audio description built into the performance.”
Accessibility here isn’t an afterthought – it’s part of the work.
Veeky, meanwhile, is looking forward to Wayang Women. “They’re a group of women working with shadow puppetry and traditional instruments. Seeing them perform at Dataran Merdeka, with that kind of energy – that’s something I’m really excited about.
